Tips on Properly Caring for Your Comforter

Unless you own a white comforter, then you may be deceived by the amount of dirt and dust that can eventually envelop your comforter. Much like other linens and clothing pieces alike, your comforter set requires care and washing as well. Here are a couple of tips to remember as your prepare to embark upon your comforter cleaning journey:

  • Use a commercial washer or visit a professional cleaner: Because your comforter is a large item, it generally will not undergo a thorough wash in a residential machine. The size and compactness of home machines tend to take the fluff and the comfort out of your comforter.
  • Use a detergent with a degreaser: Because we wrap our entire bodies in our comforters, they are generally the proud recipients of hair and body oils. Degreasing solutions can help to remove these oils from the comforter in order to ensure a proper cleanse.
  • Wash your comforter in cold water: Hot or warm water will lead to shrinkage. Because we tend to invest fair amounts of money into comforters, you will want to ensure that it lasts for a long time.
  • Wash your comforter in the morning: Because it generally takes hours for a comforter to dry, plan on washing it as early in the day as you can unless you have a back-up comforter to use as a replacement.
  • Wash your comforter 2 - 4 times per year: While comforters are designed to withstand a vast amount of dirt and dust, they do need to be cleaned. However, cleaning your comforter too often can result in shrinkage. Only wash it when it is absolutely necessary in order to preserve its comfort.

These are just a few tips to help you get started in your comforter cleaning process. If you have any other secrets, please feel free to share them!
